Gertie Gorse wore a white silk gown trimmed with silk embroidery and netting whilst orange blossoms crowned atop her bridal veil when she married Cecil Lingford on January 21, 1911.

Three months later their families were heartbroken when the couple tragically died after an explosion. Cecil was thawing stumping powder on the kitchen stove and it ignited. He was immediately killed, but Gertie valiantly dragged his body to safety. Two days after Cecil was laid to rest, Gertie passed away. Some say she died of a broken heart.

First Nations Constable Johnny James and his spouse Jennie James.

Widely known and respected as a man of his word, Johnny James worked in the bush, logging the Salmon River Valley, on river log drives, and in sawmills. He also loved playing baseball.

In the spring of 1962, James was fatally hit crossing the Trans Canada Highway. Two months later, Jennie passed away at home.

The retail cooperative S-A-F-E LTD. reopened after extensive renovations. E.A. Weir, Associate Editor of the Grain Growers’ Guide, said the shop had the best restrooms “in a store of its kind” west of Winnipeg! The cooperative also gave their female members the vote in co-op affairs in 1916—two years before women could vote in federal elections.

Built in 1907, the Hotel Alexandra was likely the last coaching house of classic design built in B.C. When Yip Chong and Yip King, owners of the Canada Café, purchased the Alexandra Hotel in 1931, they named it The Canada. In 1945 new owners changed its name to the Avon. Today it is the site of the Avon parking lot.

Salmon Arm “town” school on the site of the present-day Salmon Arm City Hall/ Law Courts.

Contractors Jackson and Parker built the school in 1908. The plans called for Mission-style architecture that, according to the Salmon Arm Observer, had a pleasing appearance. Its roof and base were a lovely shade of maroon. Contractor Jimmy Day painted the walls an attractive shade of green with accent trim in a neutral cream

At 10:00 a.m. on January 31st 1917 disaster struck while school was in attendance. It was an inferno! Students barely got out in time but rumour has it that at least one student returned to the fire to throw in her books!

The Car Show is back and bigger than ever!

Ernie Webster’s grandson Owen parked his 1930 Ford Cabriolet Mandela roadster on the street for the car show at R.J. Haney Heritage Village in 2022. We hope it will be back next year!

Is this a hat contest at the Fall Fair or a Ladies’ Auxilliary running a refreshment booth? Whatever the event, these Salmon Armites were trend setters!

R.H. Fortune at the wheel having a one-sided, animated, conversation with a back-seat driver.

Fortune built the Arts and Crafts house in 1912—on the property now called Appleyard subdivision. The automobile has a 1914 license plate and, being midsummer, the Hollyhocks are in bloom. Later that year, the widower married Stella Price in November in New York City—a winter wedding.

Did Fortune have something on his mind while talking with his best friend in the backseat?
