Happy New Year! I hope it is off to a great start. We are already rolling on some exciting projects here in the Museum & Archives in January and I look forward to working on and sharing lots throughout the year! First, I want to thank long-time Curator/Archivist Deborah Chapman who retired at the end of 2025. Over the years she has taken on all the jobs in the Museum & Archives Department that a larger institution would have several positions for, and for most of her 35-year career she did it alone (with an abundance of support from volunteers and the community, I am sure she would remind me to add). I am grateful for the time and support she has given me since I joined R.J. Haney Heritage Village & Museum last April, and for leaving me in a good position to take a lead this year as Curator/Archivist. I am so very thankful she remains a text message away!

Unlike our winter so far, this year’s Montebello Gallery exhibit will remain below freezing with a feature on all the ways ice has historically and currently influences Salmon Arm and the Shuswap region. As I begin the research phase of this exhibit in February I invite members of the community who have archival records, artifacts, or stories with a tie to this theme to reach out! It could be ice sports, environmental conditions, or you name it! You can contact me at curator@salmonarmmuseum.org or 250-832-5289.

What else have myself and the volunteers been up to? We are set up to start collections photography so that our collection can be viewed in the database rather than requiring us to go up ladders, lift boxes, and disturb delicate artifacts. We are processing incoming donations. We are getting fonds and file-level description into the database and standardizing our ‘People’ naming conventions. Mmm good data. Accessible data! I am ready to pack up and journey over to the Piccadilly Mall next month for Heritage Week with our Picnicking exhibit – I hope to see you there over a slice of pie! Also, grants. It is grant writing season and finding financial support to see our projects through is a priority. As always, if you are interested in volunteering with collections, archives, or exhibits I am happy to work with you to find something to suit your interests, skill set, and schedule. Drop me a line!
Sincerely,
Morgan Ryder, Curator/Archivist est. 2026
